SOUL ENSLAVED (Sons of Wrath, #3)

By: Keri Lake

Release Date: December 5, 2014

Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance

ISBN: 978-0-9848517-7-5

BLURB:

Imprisonment in Obsidius. Enslavement to a soul-sucking succubus. A reproductive cycle that’d send a sex fiend running into the arms of celibacy.

Given the choice, most demons would opt for death.

Gavin, eldest son of Wrath, has been sentenced to all three.

When the succubus decides its time to collect, though, he fears his nightmares have only just begun.

And Sabelle’s timing couldn’t be worse.

With a bad case of uncontrollable lust, thanks to his Savidon, the last thing Gavin wants is a vengeful succubus stoking his darkest desires, but debts must be paid—he just didn’t bank on enjoying his punishment so much.

Because the swinging bachelor may have found his perfect mate in the sexy seductress.

However, just as things seem to be looking up, past sins resurface, plunging the two into a deadly game of power and deception. As their worst fears merge into one unexpected threat, Gavin is determined to protect Sabelle and win her freedom.

At any cost.

And finally ...

I just want to finish this post by saying thank you to all of my readers.  The messages, the emails, the kind comments and reviews mean more than you know.  And so, I've dedicated Soul Resurrected to you:

I hope you enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed writing it.  It's dark, violent, steamy, and really tore my heart out at times, but it was an absolute labor of love.  Logan's a pretty cold and damaged guy.   I think he'll surprise you though, because he sure as hell surprised me.

BE SURE to check back here on November 6th when the tour begins!

You can sign up to my Newsletter (right sidebar) and receive pre-release notification of my books.  PLUS … just for signing up, you’ll receive exclusive sneaky peeks at Cover Model Contest contestants and links to upcoming episodes I’ll be posting from a serial I'm working on, titled Naphil.  I’m dubbing it a new adult, post-apocalyptic urban fantasy with angels and demons.  More information to come.  The links to these episodes will ONLY be provided to newsletter subscribers!

Snippet: A Night in Obsidius

With the upcoming release of Soul Resurrected, I thought I'd share the snippet that I wrote for J.A. Belfield's stop on the Soul Avenged Blog Tour last February.  For those who may not yet be familiar with the story, Obsidius is the much-feared prison in the demon realm where tortures and punishments are doled, mostly by these big scary ass Enforcer demons.  Even the toughest supes have nightmares about this place. In the story, Logan is sentenced to fifty years in the place--reduced to half the time, thanks to his brother, Gavin, signing up to be his Brozszius, a demon advocate, to share the punishment.  (click HERE for glossary)

I cannot write this place without Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare playing an endless loop inside my head.  It's the perfect song for this inferno of pain and suffering.

*~*~*M. Shadows*~*~*~  Le sigh ...

As an added treat for the Gavin fans, this is written from his POV.  So without further delay, I give you ...

A Night in Obsidius

The bone gavel cracked against the sound block.  Its echo traveled Gavin’s spine and for a brief moment, tested his nerve.  Jaw clenched, he leveled his gaze in the direction of the high demon official who’d just committed him to fifty years in the most feared prison of the Underworld.

Obsidius.

Only the craziest bastards were sent to Obsidius.  Gavin questioned his own sanity as held out his hands, allowing the Enforcer Demon to shackle him.  What the hell kind of freak volunteers to spend five decades in hell’s prison?  No doubt his brother was thinking the same thing.

Gavin looked beside him.

Logan—the youngest of Wrath’s sons—stood with a frown, his gaze cast downward, away from Gavin.  “Why?”

“Because whether you believe me or not, I am your brother.  You are a son of Wrath.  We are bound by blood.”

“They say that even those who survive here never escape the hell.”Logan’s voice carried a chilling edge of intrigue, more so than despair.

“All the more reason I’m glad to have cut your sentence in half,” Gavin said before the yank to his bindings jerked him forward.

A century of misery had been doled out to Logan for killing a high-ranking demon official who murdered his mother.  As his brother’s Brozszius, or advocate in the demon realm, Gavin agreed to half of the punishment.

A door on the opposite side of the Orcosii’s court opened to a dark corridor and silence.  Only the drag of chains against the concrete sliced through what felt like a momentary suspension of Gavin’s existence.  Like the final breath just before death seeped out from the shadows to swallow his soul.

As if being sentenced to five decades of torture wasn’t enough, the Enforcer that led them down the path to this twisted Disneyland of pain had to be one of the meanest looking bastards in Orcosia.  Enforcer Demons, their breed designed to dish punishment as both tormentors and mercenaries, were often hired as bounty hunters in the human realm.  Covered in a black carapace with a medieval looking weapon like a double sickle sword, they were about the most intimidating beasts Gavin had ever seen—and Wrath Demons weren’t easily intimidated.

Pulling a set of keys from its holster, the Enforcer stopped before a black door that Gavin estimated to be about ten feet in height.  Heat bled through the gaps—an ominous sensation that crawled over Gavin’s skin.  The patterns of rot etched into the wood looked almost like the blackened souls of the victims punching through from the other side, eternally trapped within its threshold.

No going back.

Not that he would.  No brother of Gavin’s was going to take a full term punishment in this place.  Even if Logan hadn’t yet accepted him as his own blood, Gavin couldn’t bring himself to let his brother suffer an unjust sentence.

He shot one glance at Logan, whose face remained stoic as ever.  Christ, did the kid ever show the slightest bit of fear?  His nerves must’ve been fashioned with some impenetrable grade of steel only found in the ‘batshit crazy’ bin of demon body parts.

The door swung open to the orange glow of flames in the center of a circular path.  Hell’s fire burned much hotter than the earthly variety—the same brand of pain that his brother Ferno carried, making him the one of the more dangerous Wrath Demons.

Impervious black doors lined multiple levels overlooking the pyre that licked the boundless darkness above them.  Ash rained from the sky like snowflakes and for a moment Gavin wondered if they were the vestiges of victims who’d been burned alive.  With a sharp exhale from the corner of his mouth he blew the hot cinders off his cheek.  Screams echoed from all directions, a blanket of suffering that settled over him as he scanned the surroundings, squinting his eyes to keep the ash out.  The cries weren’t the shallow screams of new horrors, but the tired wailing of long-lived agony.

The words of his Divine Matron drifted through his mind.  Stay strong.  Stay true.  And above all else, never let it break you.  She’d also called him insane.  But then, for whatever reason, Cefirina had always harbored some distaste for Logan.

His vision told him at the very least, he’d survive it in the end.  But fuck if it didn’t give him a single clue as to what happened in between.  The down side of being half-seer:  half-ass predictions of his future.

This would be the first of many nights.  Daylight never touched Obsidius—only nightmares that arrived in a relentless stretch of midnight—or so the rumors went.  He’d be tortured in ways he couldn’t even begin to imagine.

The clinking of chains tapped an unfaltering cadence as they clambered the black tarry-looking stairs to the second level.   Gavin peered over the railless ledge at the other Enforcers moving below with purpose, like oversized warrior ants at a flesh picnic.  The one leading him came to a halt in front of two adjacent doors.Dread churned in Gavin’s stomach.  Their chambers were side by side—meaning his brother’s sufferance would be his own.

Logan stood behind his assigned Enforcer who unlocked the door, and glanced over at Gavin.  “See you on the other side.”  Not an ounce of humility in his voice.  His eyes appeared focused and unfettered as if his mind was resolved to the possibility that his immortal body might be sacrificed for the gruesome torment that awaited him.

Gavin nodded and entered his own chamber.  In spite of the fire that burned outside of the room, a cold emptiness lingered on the inside.  Gray stone walls didn’t carry evidence of life like many prisons with markings and chipping.  Instead their dull, smooth surface told a story of forgotten death.

The slab of concrete in the center of the room, with spattered flecks of blood, would serve as Gavin’s bed for the next fifty years. A tug on his shackles brought him standing before the Enforcer Demon.  His binds were removed and the Enforcer paused, a silent command that prompted Gavin to climb atop. The uneven surface bit into his flesh—a far cry from the plush mattress and satin sheets of his own bed back at the manor.  One by one his hands and legs were bound at the corners.  The flicker of light from outside the room faded to complete blackness and the thump of the door.  A soft white glow blossomed from somewhere below Gavin, casting enough light to see his reflection in the mirrored ceiling. What kind of twisted bullshit … and yet at the same time, it didn’t surprise him.

Lifeless, beady eyes of Gavin’s captor obstructed his view and stared down at him like those of a shark—undeterred by emotions, driven by instincts.  Sick fucks were masters of both physical and mental torture.  There’d be no mercy.  No admiration for volunteering on his brother’s behalf.  Only pain.  The kind of dark shadows that nested deep inside the soul and remained dormant.

Wrath demons didn’t register pain like most species of the Underworld—their bodies were designed to endure physical destruction.  Yeah they had nerves and could sense an assault to the flesh, but their wounds healed so quickly, the agony tended to be short-lived.  Obsidius had methods of punishing all breeds of demon though, with centuries of effective torture tactics, perfected to break a victim—by any means.

The Enforcer pulled a small blade from a side holster and as he held the gleaming metal in front Gavin’s face, tipped his head.  Goddamn if those beady eyes didn’t squint into something of a smile.  The blade disappeared from Gavin’s view and he lifted his gaze once more toward the ceiling.  In the reflection, the Enforcer zipped the blade across his chest, the sound of tearing trailing his movement as he sliced away Gavin’s black t-shirt, exposing his bare skin.  He tried to imagine what his flesh might look like near the end of his punishment.

Gavin sucked in a breath through his nose, rolled his shoulders back against the rough concrete, flexed his arms and gave a sharp tug of his bindings.  “Let the fucking games begin,” he muttered.

Excerpt:

Wearing only her nightclothes, she left the room and walked the quiet halls toward the Wreck Room she’d learned of, where the demons worked out.

Light bled through the cracks in the door as she pushed it open, but Calla halted as she stepped inside.

Logan stood before a sparring dummy—punching, kicking, until it knocked over.

He picked his silent opponent up off the floor and went at it again, grunting with each powerful punch that had the thing shimmying like a dashboard hula girl.

Sweat glistened across his skin as his muscles flexed with each movement—every hit executed flawlessly. A black ball cap, turned backward, hid his short cropped hair, above the black wife beater and warm up pants he wore.

Consumed by the contraction of his muscles and the precision of every hit, Calla’s fascination stole away her earlier anger.

The guy had a way of making a girl forget how much of an asshole he could be—or anything else for that matter.

What the hell had she gone there for?

As if he’d heard her thoughts, he stopped abruptly, mid-swing, and turned around.

Those brown eyes narrowed on her and his lip curled. “What are you doing here?” He faced-off with the dummy again. “Leave.”

Discomfort flooded her insides, turning her muscles stiff “I … I was just …” She swallowed past the lump in her throat. “I’m sorry.”

He accosted her faster than she could blink.

She backed herself all the way up to the wall. Her heart thrummed, pulse racing, as he boxed her in with his arms.

Chest heaving, his eyes radiated fury as they flickered red, emitting waves of authority that begged for her to look away. “Sorry for what, exactly? For getting me stabbed? Having my brother enslaved by a fucking succubus? Or do you mean you’re sorry for getting my other brother kidnapped by a goddamn psychopathic demon hunter?”

Tingles danced along the rims of her eyes and for all the effort of holding them back, tears spilled onto her cheek. Damn him.

Logan smirked and shook his head.

God, she wanted to claw his eyes out for it, as her sadness quickly turned into something primal, lodging deep within her gut, that couldn’t’ve given a damn that the male boasted three times her strength. “You’re a bastard, you know that?”

His jaw clenched. “What did you just say?”

“I’ve met a lot of repulsive creatures in the last few years, but you’re by far the worst of them all.” She swiped at her nose. “You hate me. I get it. So why don’t you cut the crap? You want me to leave? Fine. Happy to.”

She pushed herself off the wall but was thrown back against it, the collision knocking a small bit of wind out of her lungs and forcing a cough.

Like missiles warning fire, Logan’s massive arms replanted either side of her head, his face so close his breath hit her. Red flickered in his eyes. “You’re right. I’m the worst.” He inhaled a deep breath through his nose and spoke on the exhale. “Do you know what humans are to a Wrath? Blood in the water. Like sharks, we wait in hiding for that one moment when no one’s around. You’re all alone. Vulnerable.” His pelvic bone thrust against her. “A ripe fruit. Ready to be eaten.”

A cinnamon scent drifted past her, and weakness in her knees beckoned her to collapse. Her sex ached for him to grind against her again. She licked her lips. Touch me, she wanted to say to him, as if one single caress of his finger across her skin would take away the overwhelming need to be screwed right where she stood.

For some reason, she suddenly didn’t care who’d stroll in and see them.

The more the merrier.

His eyes met hers again, and as if lust took physical form, his lids seemed heavier, his lips so kissable they taunted the distance between them. “You’ll fall prey to my pheromones.”

That voice, so deep and powerful, tickled her stomach and she wanted to laugh at the thrill washing through her insides.

Fangs protruded from his lip and Calla wondered what it’d be like to feel them at her throat. “See, I don’t even have to try to make you want me. You’d let me fuck you right here against the wall if I wanted.”

Fuck. The word echoed in her head, and her body broke out in sweat. She bit her lip as visions of the raunchiest sexual experience she’d ever witnessed passed through her mind.

Every one of them starring Logan.

Oooh!  That's it ... but only a month to go and you'll have the whole thing!

IT'S HERE!! COVER REVEAL: SOUL RESURRECTED

I had a whole intro in mind for this post … Ya know, something along the lines of how few things are more exciting than seeing your characters come to life.

Blah blah blah.

NOTHING I would’ve said could’ve possibly trumped the absolute coolness of what lies below.

So I’ll just keep it brief and say THANK YOU to all my readers who stopped in to vote for your favorite model during the Cover Model Contest.  You made it such a fun event for me--one I will totally do again!

Thank you to Julian Christian and all his muscly hotness.

And enormous thanks to my designer, David Wagner, who is just too damn awesome for words.  Seriously, he not only creates great covers, he makes it fun! Collaborating with him has been a blast!

For the constant redesign of my logo, gotta thank my fandamntabulously gifted brother, Ryan.

The dark background was taken by my talented photographer sister, Lisa, inside the Packard Plant, Detroit.  So I must say thank you to her and her fiance, Glenn, for venturing where most wouldn't dare to go.  Not kidding.  Peering into depths like these, not knowing if the structure you're standing on is strong enough to hold you in all the wreckage, is kinda frightening:

No railing.  And I don't even want to THINK of what's at the bottom if you fall...

Finally, thank you to my crew of kickass bloggers who helped me pimp this purdy little thang all over the net:

BookarooJu, Lola’s Reviews, Scribbler’s Sojourn, Book Lovin’ Mamas, A TiffyFit’s Reading Corner, Romancing the Dark Side, The Autumn Review, Book Soulmates, Talk Supe, Paranormal Reads Reviews, Reality Bites Let’s Get Lost, Pages of Forbidden Love, Under the Covers Book Blog, Reading Infection, Herding Cats and Burning Soup, Fictional Candy, Paranormal Cravings, Booked & Loaded, The Raven’s Quill, A Simple Love of Reading, The Demon Librarian & The Rabid Reader, Prufreads, Rumor Has It, Close Encounters With the Night Kind and My Random Muse.

So without further delay, here is YOUR cover, the one YOU helped design:

The Blurb:

As Wrath’s fiercest son, Logan carries the scars of fifty years spent in the most dreaded prison of the underworld, for a sin he’d kill to keep secret. Enduring decades of gruesome torture has left Logan feared by and detached from others, until a female Alexi’s blood resurrects his soul from death and, with it, the pleasures he’s been denied for so long.

Plagued by shame of her own, Calla is drawn to the ruthless demon, Logan, whose insatiable craving for her touch rouses buried passions and, for once, leaves her feeling desired.

A dark and dangerous evil has been reawakened, however, and when Calla is drawn too close to its breeding grounds, Logan vows to summon the violence of Wrath in order to keep her safe. First, though, Calla must save him from a past riddled with deceit and corruption … but only if she can accept the chilling consequences of unearthing his vilest skeleton.

Interview With David Wagner

Forgive me if this intro is a little all over the map.  It's Friday and I'm pretty excited about today's feature... I know I've been off the radar lately, but ONLY because the publication date for Soul Resurrected is around the corner (this will be a separate blog post announcement next week).  There is SO MUCH going on with this book!  I'm doing a read-thru of the MS that will be off to the editor next week sometime.

*clutches stomach*

In addition, the cover art is well on its way to reveal--mark your calendars--for AUGUST 29TH, 2013 (I'll be getting with my bloggers to help me show it off!).  The gorgeous cover model, Julian, has already been photographed for it by the very talented, David Wagner as I mentioned in a previous post.  I have a special treat at the bottom of this post...but you MUST read the interview first!!  No peeking.

David is also designing the book cover!

It's been an absolute blast collaborating him, pulling the image of Logan from my head into real life.  Only a patient person who's very attentive to details could manage such a feat in all the clutter I've got going on upstairs, and let me tell you, David is both.  I'm sure my author buds would agree, its an incredibly thrilling moment to see a character materialize just as you imagined.  And to top it off, David's enthusiasm in gathering and teasing out those details keeps me questioning how such collaboration can be considered 'work'.

Imagine someone asking you to gush about a character:  "Tell me his story and give me as many details as you can."

In the short time I've worked with David, I've come to look at him as somewhat of a kindred spirit.  So I thought I'd break from my read-thru to get a more in-depth look at his brilliance--the part of these mouthwatering photographs that you don't get to see.

KL: David, thank you for taking the time to let me pick your brain.  Why don't you start out by telling us a little bit about yourself:

DW:  I grew up in a very rural part of southwest Missouri. I was lucky enough to be born to very caring parents who are still very much in love, and have just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. I’m the youngest of 3, I have one brother and one sister. I grew up out in the country next door to my grandparents who both had a great knack for storytelling. So I spent a lot of my summers as child with my grand parents and their siblings listening to their stories of living during the time of the great depression, driving Ford Model T’s, and their memories of seeing a movie for the first time or to see an airplane for the first time.

I was drawing pictures of things around our house from the time I was 3. I drew vases. I drew houses. I drew the faces of people on the cover of Life Magazine. My favorite tv show as a child was Bewitched and I knew at a young age I wanted to be like Darrin Stephens. I wanted to be in advertising. I was lucky enough to receive an art scholarship to Missouri State University. My degree was in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design and Photography. It was there in a beginners photography class (black and white, film) that I fell in love with photography. But I felt that advertising was the better choice for finding a job when I graduated so I got my first job in advertising as an art director in 1985. I worked in Advertising for 22 years, really loved it and I think it was a great foundation to be come a photographer.

In 2005, I was diagnosed with a rare cancer and went through a very intense and challenging chemo protocol. At one point I had a severe allergic reaction to one of my chemo drugs and had to be put on a respirator for a few days. Over a four month hospital stay, I had two surgeries, a pulmonary embolism, and a ruptured upper intestine. Several times I was told to be prepared and say my goodbyes, but because of an amazing family, nurses, doctors and friends, I went into full remission. But it only lasted 3 months. At that point I had to have an experimental protocol of high dose chemo and a stem cell transplant. I was told I had a 35% chance of getting into remission and a 15% to 20% of dying from the treatment itself. Odds didn’t really seem to be in my favor but it was my only option. This was a very rough period. Basically prior to the chemo, they harvested my own stem cells that would be frozen and then given back to me after my treatment. This is done because high dose chemo is so toxic it completely ruins your immune systems ability to ever let you recover. So you get this chemo that basically get you to the brink of death, and then they infuse your back with your own frozen stem cells which were not affected by the chemo and that brings your immune system back and enables you to recover. I think that experience caused a huge shift in my life that made me feel that it was time to re-evaluate and stop doing things I didn’t want to do and to do more of what I wanted to do.

And what I wanted to do was photograph people.

KL: What an incredible journey.  You beat the odds, came out on top and ultimately pursued what you love.  Truly an inspiration!  So how did you break into photography and cover design?

DW: I think the first part of this question was answered above. One of my very best friends has been a book cover illustrator for years and he was looking for someone to take photographs of models for him to use as a basis for his photo illustrations. So that’s how the book cover work started.

KL: You can check out some of David's cover work HERE

What do you predominantly photograph?

DW: Most of my work is for fiction romance and paranormal novels. And since the majority of those covers require photographing very handsome and built men, this has expended my areas of expertise to fitness photography, and fashion photography.

KL: Handsome, built men you say?  Suddenly wishing I had some camera talent...  Do you have any requirements while photographing that get you in the zone?

DW: My only requirement is a comfortable, relaxed, stress-free environment. No egos, no drama…from myself or the models.

KL: Have you ever photographed anyone famous?

DW: The most famous person I’ve photographed is probably the most well-known fitness model, Greg Plitt. Greg has probably been on the cover of more fitness magazines than any other model and was also one of the trainers on Bravo’s “Workout”.

KL: What do you love most about your job?

DW: I’m still in awe of light and how it shows us things and hides things from us. And it’s fascinating to try to control that to tell a story.

KL: Is there a model you’d love to photograph someday?

DW: I think my two favorite models that I would love to work with are David Gandy and Tony Ward. They are both exceptional models who really push the envelope and are willing to be seen in untraditional ways.

KL: Gandy?  *zones out* Yeah, so, when you book his shoot, let me know.  Happy to be *cough* an assistant or something.  Have you designed covers for any well-known authors?

DW: I think the most well know author that I’ve shot cover photography for would be Kresley Cole.

KL: Pause.

I'm sorry, I MUST take a moment to fangirl.

KRESLEY COLE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Okay, moving on.  Is there an author whose cover you’d love to design some day?

DW: Well, I hope to continue to work with author Keri Lake. Beyond that I would love to do covers for some other authors that are not really in the romance/paranormal genre, such as Michael Cunningham, David Sedaris, Dan Brown, Michael Chabon and Caleb Carr

KL: I'm very much hoping to continue working with you as well, David!  If you could hop into a time machine and travel to any point in history, who would you love to meet and why?

I would go to Florence Italy in the 15th century and would try to apprentice with Michelangelo or DaVinci. I think this time of enlightenment, a time when art was as important (and actually part of) science would be wonderful.

QUICK FIRE ROUND:

Life Motto to Live By: Follow your passion. Trite I know, but it’s true.

Meet Logan from Soul Resurrected:

"Not following.  And to be honest, I’m caring less the more you talk.  So let’s cut the shit and start the bleeding.”  Logan flipped the dagger in his hand.  “My hand gets twitchy after a while."

Soul Resurrected Update!!

Whoa!  Just noticing that it’s been two weeks since I last blogged! Good reason for that though.

It’s been a preeeeeeeetty busy start to July!  First, the cover model results … did y’all see those?  If not, go take a peek because it’s worth looking at the winner’s photo one more time even if you have seen the results:

WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT

Julian is so … le sigh.

He makes one very sexy muse for this character.  A great pick for the cover.

Okay so that’s one reason why I haven’t been blogging the last couple of weeks, but I’ll get to that in a sec.

Last week was my sister’s bachelorette party and I celebrated with her, friends and family down in Detroit.

Check out the bride-to-be:

My other sister was also in town and I was VERY excited to hang out with her at my nephew’s birthday party:

 Miss her ❤

So that was my busy weekend with the family.

Going back to the book cover …

Julian’s photo shoot was last Sunday and let me tell you, in the thick of prepping Soul Resurrected for beta readers, I found myself slipping in and out of focus.

So.  Distracted.

Especially when photographer, David Wagner, sent me some images of Julian at the beginning of the shoot.

Holy Hella Hotness.

This cover is going to rock ... so frickin' excited!!

Yeah so much as I tried to concentrate after that, visions of chiseled abs and pecs mercilessly danced through my head.

Then there were the 300 or so additional images that David sent later in the evening that left me … totally done.  Like don't talk or look at me because my eyes are glued to the computer screen for the next hour done.

Good God.  I have no idea how I’m going to narrow it down to one pick.

By some miracle though, I did eventually finish up the final edits to Soul Resurrected and it’s in the hands of some very badass betas with sharp pens.  I hope they tear the everloving shit out of that thing and leave me with a ravaged, bloody mess.

So what’s next??

Well, I’m going to be opening the Official Sons of Wrath Store.

And …

I promised to put together a page for all the handsome faces I’ve stumbled upon during the Cover Model Contest.  So these two will be my focus for the next week while I try not to obsess over the fact that quite a few people are reading my book right now.

*breathes into paper bag*

David and I are choosing the final image for the cover and I’ll be scheduling the Cover Reveal VERY soon!!!

After that, I’ll be putting together some fun stuff for the Soul Resurrected Blog Tour.  Might do something a little different this time … I’ve got some crazy ass ideas floating around my head for that.

OH!!  And remember the sexy Italian model that I chose for Calix's cover?  I'm going to give you guys a little sneak peek of him too!!

I’m also going to be treating August as sort of a NaNo month and will be busting my butt to write Soul Enslaved (Gavin’s book).

All you Gavin fans will be pleased to know that the search for his cover model will begin soon!!

Phew!  Lots coming up ...

But I’m curious to know how YOU guys see Gavin … anyone come to mind when you think of this character?  Actors, musicians, your local Starbucks barista???  This will help me in the narrowing down sexy candidates process.  Not that I'm complaining, but it's not an easy job, ya know?  i kinda want to scoop all of them up and make a big sexy alpha sandwich for the cover.  So give me some input!!

And The Winner Is ...

Yeah, okay I said I was going to post the results tomorrow, but ya know?

Who’s gonna complain that they’re a day early???

Man, I’ve never been so eager to calculate a spreadsheet full of numbers in my life!!  I attended a wedding on Saturday and all I could think about, aside from the relentless loop of AC/DC You Shook Me All Night Long playing in my head (thanks, Cheeks!), was how badly I wanted to get home and do my homework.

For months I’ve been going through portfolios, searching for the face of Logan and now, I finally get to announce him!!

Before I do, just want to quickly thank some people who were an integral part of this contest and made it a successful venture:

To all of the models:

Not just the final five, but ALL the guys (over 200 candidates) who submitted their portfolios. Thanks so much for the daily distraction and for taking an interest in the contest!

To my top 5 candidates

(Michael Ceorgoveanu, Julian Christian, Jon Mahoney, Ajdin Sefer and Adriel)

I had no idea what to expect with this contest.  You guys made it fun and exciting, not just for me, but for readers as well.  Your drop dead good looks combined with your bios and interview responses brought such variety to all the different traits of this character—from cocky bad boy, to Logan’s tortured side.  Thank you so much for taking the time and participating.  And uh … for giving me something to stare at the past few months, of course.  *coughs*

Definitely something I’d repeat.

To the bloggers who helped me spread the word:

Love my pimps!

Booked and Loaded, Bookaroo-Ju, Reality Bites Let's Get Lost, Paranormal & Urban Fantasy Reviews & Goodies, Paranormal Book Club, Prufreads Blog, Book Lovin Mamas, Under the Covers, Reading Between the Wines Book Club, Romancing the Dark Side, Got Fiction, Fictional Candy, Herding Cats & Burning Soup, Talk Supe, Reading Infection, The Drunken Pervy Creepers, The Autumn Review

Thank you so much!

Finally, to my readers:

I wanted to find a way to make you a part of my next book, to give you something fun and entertaining as you patiently await Logan’s story.  Even if your guy didn’t win, you own a part of this story because you got to know the character, you participated, you provided your input, you spread the word and your name will be included in the acknowledgments (if you opted to be included)!

I can promise you that there will be more opportunities throughout this series for all of you to own a part of my stories.  Thanks so much for reading them and giving me a big reason to love what I do.

YOU made this contest a success!!

Okay, on to the winners of the $50 Amazon gift cards and t-shirts:

Congratulations to Elizabeth K. H. and Judith C.!

I also picked another winner from the comments on the voting page for a Sons of Wrath Swag Pack:

Congratulations to Veronica de Luna!

I shall be emailing all of the winners today.

AND NOW …

to find out which sexy candidate I’ll be drooling er, will serve as my muse for book two.

The votes have been aggregated, calculated, obsessed over.

And I’m incredibly excited to announce that ...

JULIAN CHRISTIAN will represent the face of Logan for Soul Resurrected!!

If you happen to recall from his spotlight (did anyone read what I wrote or …) I mentioned that it was this photo that got me all tingly about advancing him to the finalists:

I can't help it ... now every time I look at this photo, the song pops into my head.  Thinkin' its his badass expression ...

This is good.  Very good.

After all, it was this song that inspired the character.

Guess what?

The genius photographer behind this photo, David Wagner of WagnerLA Photography, will be working with me on the cover design, which means, (not that he needed any help, mind you), Julian will be looking dayum good when it’s all said and done.

I mentioned in a previous post that David also photographed the sexy Italian model who will be the face of Calix in book four.  And um … wow.  I’ll share those as soon as I can.  Excuse me ... *picks jaw up off the floor*

And since Soul Resurrected (Book Two) is slated for fall publication, y’all get to see the final results very soon as I’ll be scheduling the cover reveal next!

HolyHotDamnSomeoneKnockMeTheHellOut.

Gonna need something hard-hitting to tone down my excitement a little!!

Quickly, I’ll just mention that I’m nearly finished with my edits.  I know, I know.  WTF?!  Well, more than anything, I want to give you guys a great story.  I can’t bring myself to throw out a bunch of shite for the sake of a deadline.  So I’m slightly behind but will be handing off the manuscript to my betas next week.

Betas … I’ll be hunting you down soon!

Lastly, if your guy didn’t happen to win this particular cover—and I’m asking that all voters please be respectful to all candidates in the contest—fret not, for there are plenty of books and novellas plotted for this series.  You might just see his handsome face on a future cover!

Gavin’s book is next … and I can’t WAIT to begin looking for the gorgeous face that will represent him in Soul Enslaved.

Thank you again for helping me choose the guy.

All five of the candidates are absolutely drool-worthy, and if left up to me, would've been squished together onto one cover.

Come to think of it ...

What a smokin' hot mess that would've been!

Contest Update & Announcement!

Happy Friday!

We’re now one week into voting for the Cover Model Contest with one more to go!

If you haven’t yet read Soul Avenged, no worries!  I added a short Slice of Life featuring Logan on the voting page to get a taste of what this character is all about.

Man, this has been such a blast, reading your comments, sneaking peeks at the votes, haha.

So who's winning so far???

I don't know.

(Oh c’mon, you didn’t think I was going to give away hints in this update, did you??)

I haven’t aggregated anything yet because, well, I kinda don’t want to touch the results until its time to touch the results.  For the last week, I've been plagued with NIGHTMARES about losing all this data!  But I will say, it’s awesome that some of you have ‘your guy’ and keep showing him the love.

I’m incredibly humbled by the comments you’ve left on the page.  Thanks so much for the love you’ve shown me as well!  Based on your feedback and the overall experience so far, I think I’m definitely going to do this for Gavin’s book.

Oh yeah.  His is next, by the way.  Make sure you add Soul Enslaved to your Goodreads shelf!

Soul Enslaved (Sons of Wrath, #3)

And that’s all I’m gonna say about the results until next week!

REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN VOTE OFTEN!!

And you don’t have to enter your name and email address every time if you’ve already done that once.

Also …

If you’re willing to change your Facebook cover photo to my cover photo (just right click save and you can upload it), then either paste on my FB wall or email me the link, your name will go into another drawing for an autographed copy of Soul Avenged.

Here's my email:  keri@kerilake.com

Spread the word!!  Don’t be shy.

Only one more week to pick the right guy!

Wait … did I just rhyme?

And now on to MORE very exciting news:

During the course of this contest, I mentioned that I’ve stumbled upon some really stunning men.  In fact, I have even MORE MORE news that I’ll get to in a moment.

But first …

Yeah I think I pretty much went on ad nauseam that one of the most difficult tasks in cover design, is trying to find the face that matches the character in my head.  Its damn near impossible because there are so many non-physical details involved.  Blah blah blah.

While busy searching for the face of Logan, I happened upon a gem though.

One that I just couldn’t pass up.

In the series, Calix is one of the seven Wrath brothers, half incubus, described as having dark hair with cerulean eyes.  Easy to match you say?  No.  Not really.  Not as I imagine him anyway, because he’s more than those relatively simple features.  He’s brooding and loyal and sexy and has a certain swagger.  Okay so wait, I found a t-shirt on Pinterest that pretty much describes him:

Supercaliswagilisticsexyhelladopeness.

I’m incredibly excited to announce that I have chosen a model for Calix’s cover, who happens to be getting photographed for it TODAY.  Yes today!!  And at some point, I get to see a sneak peek of him, so I’ll be biting my nails until then …

Because I want enough word count to gush about these two, I’m going to discuss the frickin’ uh-MAZING photographer and the smokin’ hot Italian (yes ladies, he’s from Italy!) model in a future post.  For now, I’ll just say …

I am OUT-OF-MY-MIND excited about this!!

To have a character come to life is just thrilling.  To bring TWO to life in one summer is enough to warrant some heavy tranquilizers just to calm down.

Now one more thing before you go …

For all those handsome faces (and bods, good God, let's not forget those bods) that I drooled over during the model search -- I’m dedicating a page on my site with links to their portfolios.  So any of you authors out there who might be looking for some really HAWT guys to add to your covers, check them out because they’ve expressed an interest in cover model work and I’m pretty damn sure they’d love to hear from you.

This page will go live after the contest!

Okay that is all.

Now go vote for your guy one more time before you leave!!  Go go go!

Know What Begins On Monday??

Back in February, I had this really good idea for my next book:  let my readers vote for the cover model.  YOU buy my books, YOU immerse yourself in my world and become invested in my characters.  Why not let YOU make the final decision?  Really, how often do you get a chance to pick the face for a cover? Sounded great to me! Because I had NO idea what to expect, I decided having it sometime in June would allow me to scramble for a Plan B in the event this one bombed and I was left begging random guys off the street to let me slap them on my book.

Thankfully, Plan A worked out brilliantly.  Candidates rolled in from all over the world, blowing me away with their handsome faces.  By some miracle, I managed to narrow the pool down to FIVE smokin’ hot finalists that I think would capture the look of Logan.  FIVE!!  Out of all those absolutely stunning men.  It wasn’t easy, but I did it.

Still, the contest seemed SO FAR AWAY …

Know what’s crazy?

Spotlights go live next week!!  One candidate will be featured every day, beginning on Monday.  Candidates will be revealed in the order of their teasers.  For example, Teaser #1 will be Monday, Teaser #2 on Tuesday and so on.  A short bio, why I chose the candidate, and interview questions will be included in each spotlight.

Is your trigger finger ready?

Voting will go live on

FRIDAY, JUNE 14th at 6pm EST

Mark your calendars ~ Tell your friends

Every friend you bring to vote gets you one step closer to winning one of TWO $50 Amazon gift cards that I’ll be giving away for this event!

PLUS ...

Every one who votes will be included on a special Contributors page of Book #2.

Voting runs June 14th – 28th

You still have time to catch up on your reading and learn more about Logan before you cast your vote!!

What's New? Soul Resurrected Update

First, I want to thank the many readers who picked up a copy of Soul Avenged while it was 99 cents!  Hope you enjoy the read! Recently I was tagged by the lovely Krista Walsh to participate in this little Q&A about current projects that’s been circulating the blogosphere.  I’m actually pretty excited because I get to chat about my upcoming release, Soul Resurrected, due out sometime in October.

And so on to the questions …

What are you working on right now?

Well, on a non-writing topic, I’m running a cover model contest for book 2 and asking my readers to choose the face of my character, Logan.  That begins June 14th and I’m REALLY excited about it.  I’m also opening the Sons of Wrath store in a couple of weeks too.  As far as WiP’s, I’m working on edits to Soul Resurrected, the second book in my Sons of Wrath series.  And if I keep to Krista’s format with this, then I get to share a snippet from the book!  Yay!

Here’s a short scene from book 2 with Calla and Logan:

“Draven killed my brother.  I intend to kill Draven.”

“You referring to the little prick that stabbed me? He’s my kill.”

“My kill.  My kill,” she mocked.  “You sound like some kind of prehistoric hit man.”

Logan’s cheek dimpled as if he tried to subdue a smile.  “Let’s just say that I let you have a go at him—”

“Let me?”  She leaned back against the window and crossed her arms.  “What makes you think I’m asking your permission first?  I get a kill shot, I’m taking it.”

His once-over, tits to legs, followed by a lick of his lips had her squirming on the inside.

“You’re fucking cute as hell when you’re feisty.”  His gaze swung toward the road then back on her.

Warmth tingled in her cheeks at the same time her stomach fluttered like she’d ingested a brawling swarm of butterflies.  She snapped her head to the side, diverting her attention toward the window, hoping he didn’t catch the sudden flush.

“What would you do?  If he was yours to kill.  How would you do it?”

She glanced back and frowned.  “Why are you asking me this?”

“I’m a demon.  A sick fuck.  This shit turns me on.”

“He’s the reason my brother is dead.”  Calla twisted to face him again, her jaw tight as she spoke, “Jake suffered a slow and painful death.  So will Draven.”

How does it differ from other works in its genre?

I think a unique element of this series is the violence and gore.  It’s a dark world with a variety of supernaturals, and humans often unwittingly find themselves caught in the middle.  Yet, as it’s a paranormal romance, I like to tie everything up with HEA at the end.  This book is steamier than Soul Avenged too.

What experiences have influenced you?

Just about every little detail in my life has some level of influence over my writing.  A bad day can translate into a really violent scene.  Hahaha!  People I meet can give rise to heroic or villainous characters.  It depends.  Other writers have played a huge role in my writing as well.  Their encouragement and feedback really pushed me to publish Soul Avenged (I originally hadn’t planned to do anything with this series).

Why do you write what you do?

If I didn’t write, I think I’d go nuts.  A lot of what I do in my day is analytical, number crunching.  I crave creativity.  Paranormal romance and urban fantasy is the perfect genre to let my imagination run wild.  I can create worlds, supernaturals in those worlds, and rules that they must follow.  It’s fun and allows me to break from the madness of my day to day.

How does your writing process work?

My writing process is not ideal.  In fact, I’m sure most writers would roll their eyes at the way I approach my stories.  I can’t outline and plot or do anything organized like that.  I put the earplugs in and as soon as my fingers hit the keys I’m typing what my characters tell me to write. As fast as I can, I’ll get the bare bones of the story onto paper, er, computer screen.  Then its layer upon layer.  I like to flesh out the main storyline first, which happens to be the blossoming romance between the H/h.   After that, I fill in holes and add subplots.  Then I probably take about 1-2 months of intense editing before I feel okay enough to pass it along to betas.

What is the hardest part about writing?

Cutting it off!  My current WiP is 140K words because I just couldn’t stop.  Now I’m tasked with having to cut 20K or more from the manuscript, while making sure all the meaty parts of the story are still in tact.  I’m also very critical of my own work.

What would you like to try as a writer that you haven’t yet?

I actually have an idea for an erotica written down.  Not sure if I'll do anything with it.  I’m very closely bordering romantica in this current WiP.  I’d also like to try horror sometime.

Who are the authors you most admire?

My favorites are Anne Rice, Poe and Kresley Cole.  I also have a lot of respect for paranormal romance and urban fantasy author J.A. Belfield.  That woman is incredibly strong with all she’s been through and writes brilliant stories.  She also happens to be my editor and I think she’s just a whole helluva lot of awesome.

I also have enormous respect for the indies.

Who are new authors to watch out for?

Some authors that I think readers should check out are:  J.A. Belfield (mentioned above), Colin F. Barnes, Narcisse Navarre, KL Schwengel, Krista Walsh, Candice Bundy and Terri Rochenski.

What scares you?

Spiders and failure.

As this is a blog chain, I'll leave it open for anyone who'd like to participate and discuss a current WiP!

Cover Model Teaser #4!! #CoverModelContest #SonsOfWrath

It’s happening again … I’ll blame it on the fact that Soul Resurrected is written, in edits, and I can’t really torment my characters much, that I feel the need to take it out on all of you.

My diabolical half has, once again, coerced my (otherwise angelic) self into serving up another inbox teaser from the Cover Model Contest.  By now, you know the drill:  a cropped, blurry, pixelated, ripped body—cruel on my part, I know.

I’m certain you haven’t even bothered with my ramblings this time and have scrolled straight for the goods.

For those who haven’t bailed on me yet, thanks for sticking it out.  You have incredible willpower because, yeah, I’d have skipped the first half of this blog post too and zeroed in on what’s really important here.

I'll keep this brief.  A reminder:

JUNE 10-14   COVER MODEL SPOTLIGHTS (Get to know these guys)

JUNE 14-28TH  THE VOTING BEGINS!!

And just for stopping in to vote, you'll not only exercise the power to choose my next cover model, I'll also include you in the acknowledgments of book 2 on a special 'Contributors' page AND you'll score VIP access to nab the book before its released!

I’m still going through all of the entries, as they continue to come in.  Keep in mind, the contest runs until June, meaning there will be lots of perfectly sculpted abs and pecs (and biceps ... mmm) to keep my salivary glands in working order.  And lets not forget those lady-killing smiles to go along with them!

Sa-woon!

Oh wait … you guys haven’t seen those yet.  Sorry.  *snicker*

I’ll keep at it though, because I want to give you one kickass cover for the next book.  One you’ll hold in the palm of your hand, biting your lip as you ponder what exactly a washboard stomach tastes like.

All right.  Enough of my blah-blah-blah.  I know what you really want.

Believe me when I say, it hurts to have to mess with these pics.

Here's today’s teaser:

And if you're reading this at work, make sure your boss doesn't catch you licking the screen …

Le sigh.

Somewhere in the world, this body, hidden beneath a perfectly normal t-shirt, is leaving behind a wake of distraction in every female he passes.

Cover Model Teaser #3!! #CoverModelContest #SonsOfWrath

I am beyond thrilled to announce that I have another finalist for the Cover Model Contest. First though, a little blah blah blah and then I’ll give you what you came here to see.

The entries continue to trickle in for this contest—from all over the world, which is actually pretty cool.  The challenge is weeding through all these entries to find ‘the one’ most aligned with my character from book two.

This is not an easy task.  Sure, it sounds fun as all hell to drool over chiseled bodies and handsome faces.  The fact remains, I’m on a mission to find the most fitting guy for the cover.  And I can’t speak for all writers, of course, but I happen to be one picky biotch when it comes to my muse.  So to have found four suitable candidates is nothing short of a miracle.

I mentioned it before, but here is what I have in mind for this contest:

During the week of JUNE 10TH – 14TH, I will be spotlighting the candidates.  This is when you’ll FINALLY get to see their faces in addition to those muscly bods.  (I promise to lock away my inner tease who likes to torment you by blurring and cropping the pics).  They’ll provide more pictures, bios, as well as links where you can like/follow them and get to know who these guys are before you vote.

Voting will commence on JUNE 14TH and continue through the 28th.  I’ll be running a giveaway at that time as well, and anyone you bring along with you to vote will increase your chances of winning.  So if you KNOW someone who likes paranormal romance, tell them to check out Soul Avenged to get themselves all cozy and acquainted with this character before the voting begins!  And if your friend pops in to vote, you’ll score a bonus entry into the drawing.

Okay okay.  Enough with the deets.  Let’s move on to the candy, shall we?  You know the deal—cropped, blurred.  Sorry!  I promise you’ll see much more in those spotlights.

I happen to know today is his birthday too, so let's show him some love.

I give you today’s teaser …

Too bad you can’t see the cute smirk to go along with this pose.

*evil, taunting laugh*

Hot DAYUM.

Oh yes, that's ink on that muscled bicep!

No doubt, this guy is raising temperatures wherever he goes ...

Sons of Wrath #2 Snippet

So as you know, I'm introducing some new characters in Sons of Wrath #2, including a couple that unexpectedly popped up in the story: “Nice job." Gavin's lips tightened as he nodded. "But I think we’re going to need to up our security. First that little shit who broke in earlier and now this.”

Lifeless, black orbs of the ghoul met Gavin's stare.

“I’d wanted to avoid this, but I think it’s time to call on Xander.”

The ghoul’s shoulders slumped and he rubbed a mutilated hand down his face. “Ah hell, boss. Sure about that? I mean, with all these ladies you got staying here.”

“We know nothing of these creatures. Xander is a loose cannon, but I know whose side he’s on. Let’s not forget it was a nephilim who armed our trespasser earlier. Until we find the kid, our security is at risk. Time to fight fire with a goddamn blowtorch.”

“Sir, nephilim at least have human motivations. The fallen …”—the ghoul swallowed a harsh gulp—“well they’re worse than demons. No disrespect to ya, boss.”

“I understand. Right now I have two brothers overseas and one out of commission. Having him here will only be temporary.” Gavin pointed at the ghoul. “And you’re still head of security.”

“Yessir.”

“Prepare the others.” Gavin huffed, his gaze trailing over each of the ghouls surrounding him. “This place is about to get shaken and I am not looking forward to sharing the news with Ben. Nothing spells a shitty night on the horizon quite like a pissed off troll.”

**************

There’s just something about Mondays … ugh.  It’s that whole beginning of the week thing that has me dragging through my morning routine.  Well, I decided to do something about it, because for once, I’d like to say my Monday rocked!!

I have been running a few giveaways here and there on other blogs, but it’s been a LONG time since I offered up a giveaway on my own.

So here’s the deal …

I’m going to give away TWO signed copies of Soul Avenged and Sons of Wrath t-shirts to go along with them!

Answer the question below and enter to win via the Rafflecopter:

Pretend there was this novel about, oh I dunno, a bunch of sexy, brawny alpha demons who deal in vengeance.  And by some stroke of luck (that leaves the author of said book hyperventilating with excitement), it’s made into a movie.  Who would you cast as four of the demons?

They don’t have to be MY four demons, mind you.

Just pick four hotties that you’d love to see in one movie together in the comments below.

This contest will run until Monday, April 29th, because Mondays usually suck and I need something to look forward to, right?

So give me some sexy picks and a reason to wake up all chipper and stuff: a Rafflecopter giveaway
